More nuggets from Catalyst 2011.
This time from Reggie Joiner.
Reggie talked about three dials that we need to “turn up” if we want to see our students live into bigger and better stories… and these dials come from the Greatest Commandment:
- Relationship with God (Wonder) — we are instinctively drawn to what is supernatural, miraculous and spiritual
- Relationship with self (Discovery) — we are instinctively drawn to understand our own uniqueness and role in a bigger story.
- Relationship with others (Passion) — we are instinctively drawn to connect relationally and to rescue those who are hurting or broken.
How do we insight WONDER?
Design — help students to understand that they are designed with a purpose and intention
Identity — help students to see how they are made in the image of God
Connection — help students to know that God wants and desires a relationship with them.
This thread runs throughout their entire life!
How do we Provoke Discovery?
Faith — we need to invite students to trust in what God and Jesus did, and are doing. If we don’t allow students to process their own doubts, they’ll never own their own faith. It’s not great faith in God, but faith in a, great God.
Transformation — we need to help students understand that not only can they change, but God wants to be a part of it! We need to be reminded that we were once where “they” were. Remember, the Holy Spirit at work!
Truth — we need to consider what truths do we want our students to walk away with. This needs to shape and focus our work.
How do we Fuel Passion?
Community — we need to help students see how they’ve been designed to do life together.
Compassion — we need to help them learn how to be a good neighbor; and love the people God loves.
Restoration — we need to invite them into God’s mission in the world.
A big problem that WE need to address: we turn the passion dial down when we replace experience with education.
This needs to shape our ministry efforts with students!!
When our students experience what God is up to in the world, they will be much more likely moved to live out a better story.
Good stuff, Reggie!
