Dying to Fit In

As the fall term progresses, new social scenes will solidify, leaving some students on the outside.

After starting the year with hope and optimism, some students will begin to question what’s wrong with them…

Why have they been left out?

Why can’t they belong?

It’s beyond frustrating. In fact, for many it quickly gets to the point of being debilitating.

Not having a place to belong can bring a person’s world to a stand still — in just about every way imaginable.

And I wonder, as social scenes are solidifying on campus, what opportunities we might now have?

How can we make sure that we continue to reach out to students who are experiencing this harsh social reality on campus?

How do we make sure that we’re a part of the solution on campus, and not a part of the problem.

Our ministries should be known for their radical hospitality and inclusivity — among other things.

So as we go about campus this week, may we do so with fresh eyes and attentive spirit, looking for those students that might need us to reach out (again) and invite them.

Let’s make it as easy as possible for them to fit in and belong.

  1. So, once they’re in the door, any thoughts on how to continually care for them? Some students aren’t as socially winsome/adept/etc. and can easily slide to the fringe, or even clump together. We want students to stay connected to the larger group, so they are known, cared for, and, ultimately, get to see and experience Jesus more. Maybe another way of saying it is, how do you maintain a winsome, inclusive culture?
