I’m Giving Away 5 Tickets to the Faith ON Campus Summer Institute!

Win your way to the 2013 Faith ON Campus Summer Institute!

That’s right, I’m giving away 5 tickets to this inaugural event, and you could win one of them.

Here’s the deal — I need your help spreading the word about this upcoming event — so I’m going to give you the opportunity to tweet, post, and share your way into the drawing that will be held on the last day of every month.

The rules are simple:

Navigating the Potholes of Leadership (in the Year Ahead)

I recently ran across this quote while re-reading Parker Palmer’s, Let Your Life Speak:

We will become better teachers not by trying to fill the potholes in our souls but by knowing them so well that we can avoid falling into them. (Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak, p. 52)

As I read and re-read those words, something resonated deep within me, and I was able to see how these wise words apply for beyond the scope of teaching — to touch most of life really.

Given the work that we do with students, my first thought was to replace the word teachers in the aforementioned quote, with the word leaders (or pastors or equippers:

2012’s Top 12 Posts

Wow! It’s been another great year here at FaithONCampus.com.

Thanks to all of you who helped to shape these conversations, challenge my thinking, and push me into new realms of research and praxis in the world of college ministry.

Here are the TOP 12 most viewed posts of the year!

Where’s Your Growing Edge?

I don’t know about you, but I can be a creature of habit.

If I’m not careful, I can become very content in the rhythms and routines that I create for myself.

And some of that, admittedly, is good.

But during a recent conversation with a colleague, I was surprised to learn that one of the greatest sources of joy — free and available to anyone — is found in learning and doing new things.

Growing.

Changing.

Moving away from the status quo.

Because I’m Thankful for Y-O-U…

I have so much to be thankful for this year… not the least of which is the work God has called me to with college students.

And I’m thankful to have you as a colleague — wherever you serve — on mission to reach this generation of college students for Christ.

As an expression of my appreciation for you — and all that you do — I’m extending to you a 20% discount to the 2013 Faith ON Campus Summer Institute.

WOW — it’s November!

We’ve turned a corner and can now see Thanksgiving break off in the distance — and so can our students.

It’s been another good month here at FaithONCampus.com. Thanks to all who participated in The Art of Self-Leadership Blogathon. This month’s Top 10 includes a number of great guest posts from this event.

When you’re done checking out these posts, I begin to think more intentionally about the remaining weeks of the fall term, I’d encourage you to check out Ideas for November.

Catalyst Conference and Bloggers Meetup

Next week I’ll be pushing my introverted self to my outer limits, as I once again brave the crowd for the 2012 Catalyst Conference.

I consider it a good exercise in putting aside my own desires (to only be in rooms containing a small number of people — ideally, people I know to some degree), in order to hear from some of the leading thinkers and practioners in Christian ministry, as well as to connect with friends — many of whom I’ve only ever connected with online.

So if you’re going, I’d love to find a time and place to connect.

And if you’re a blogger, or dabble in blogging, or are thinking about starting a blog some day, you may want to consider joining a much smaller crowd on Wednesday evening (Oct. 3rd) at the Atlanta Bloggers Meetup.

Announcing The Art of Self Leadership Blogathon [Oct. 23-25]

Preparation for the next Blogathon are now underway!

The Art of Self Leadership Blogathon will be a chance for us to talk together about our need to lead self — while faithfully living out our call to lead others. As leaders, we often put our own needs aside in order to focus on those around us. But in order for us to be the effective, healthy, and durable leaders we desire to be, we need to be wise, intentional, and strategic with regard to how we manage our time, establish and protect different boundaries, approach our work, and faithfully live out our call to serve others.

This time will be a chance to explore new ideas and best practices as it relates to our service as faithful leaders, as well as to engage in online conversation about some of the challenges or struggles we face in this area of Self Leadership.

Happy Labor Day!

For most of us — a new academic year is now well underway.

For some of us — it’s just about to begin.

Either way — I hope that this extended weekend serves as a great chance for you to refuel and recharge as we prepare to push on into a fall of ministry with college students.

Below are the Top 10 most viewed posts from the month of August!

We Are NOT Professionals

We are not professionals.

We’re not.

At least I’m not.

You see, I was reminded this past weekend — at an Ordination Service of all things — that those of us in full-time ministry positions are NOT professionals. We can’t be.

To be a “professional” is to imply a level of expertise — which is attainable in a number of fields — but not in ministry.
