Do You Lead TOO Much?

If I’m honest, sometimes… when I’m at church, trying to worship… I find myself feeling a little guilty about my level of leadership involvement within our church community.

I think it’s not enough.

I feel like I should be doing more.

But there are other times when I feel that my present level of involvement is just fine — even appropriate — given the nature of what I do on campus all throughout the week.

Do you ever struggle with this?

Do you ever feel compelled to give more, and more, and more of yourself… simply because you are trained, equipped, and qualified???

When do you say ‘no’?

When do you allow others to lead?

And yourself to be led by others?

As much as I might find myself in this tension, from time to time, one of the things I have learned about myself is that I need times in my life when I can take of the ‘leadership hat’ that I wear.

There are times I need to NOT lead.

I need to be led by others.

And I think this ultimately serves to refresh me, give me some much needed perspective — on leading and following — and ultimately, make me a better leader when I put that ‘hat’ back on.

Honestly, I fear what I might become if felt compelled to lead all the time — in every situation.

I don’t think I would be very effective… for very long.

What about you…

  1. For real yo! I’ve been dealing with this tension so much that I took a year off from serving at church at all. (kinda felt guilty though because I’m telling my students to serve ha!). Now I am itching to jump back in but not at the level I used to so I actually can be fed.
