Helping Stressed Students

It’s that time of year again.

Another academic term is beginning to wind down.

And our student’s stress levels are winding up.

Under the weight of impending academic deadlines, and lofty expectations relating to their GPA’s, our students are beginning to crack under the (oft self-imposed) pressure that the end of a term can bring.

And while there is a lot we can tell them about how they need to “keep things in perspective,” and “take things one step at a time,” and even “trust God and do their very best”… I wonder how we can best help them in the midst of their stress-induced break-down.

There are times for talking about all of the preventative measures students can take to better utilize their time… especially around finals.

But that time is NOT in the midst of their breakdown.

That is not what they need in those moments.

But what is?

What is it they come looking for when they enter our office, stop us on campus, or text us in ALL CAPS!!!?

There must be a reason they seek us out… and not their friends, professors, parents or others.

What is it we offer?

A listening ear?

A caring spirit?

A peaceful presence?

A willingness to pray?

A safe space to be?

A compassionate hug?

A corny comment to cut the tension?

It’s hard to say really.

And it’s probably not something that their friends, professors, parents or others couldn’t also offer them…

But it’s likely something they’ve experienced in us, or through us, consistently throughout the year.

While it is unlikely that we will be able to keep our students from becoming overly stressed — we can definitely find ways to minister to them as the opportunities present themselves — or even by hosting some de-stressing kinds of events to close out the year.
