JOIN THE MIRACLE OF FEEDING THE MULTITUDES!

About 925,000 people go to bed hungry every night.  Food insecurity plagues one in seven people on the planet.  Around 25,000 people die every twenty-four hours from hunger or hunger related disease – more than those who succumb to malaria, TB and AIDS combined.  Most of them are children – ten children die every minute.

What makes these statistics not only staggering but sinful are these two additional facts.  There is enough food produced for each person on the planet to consume 4.3 pounds of food per day – that’s equivalent to seventeen quarter pounders.  Even college students don’t eat that much food!  And this: nearly 3 trillion pounds of food goes to waste every year.

Those numbers would leave us feeling powerless were it not for the fact that every single person can do one thing to change this reality.  Ending hunger in our lifetime is complex but achievable.  Ending hunger is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty, to empower indigenous persons, to energize local economies, to lift up the capacity of women, and to educate children, all with the goal of providing all God’s people a future filled with hope.

Stop Hunger Now invites you and your campus to join the movement to end hunger in our lifetime.  By partnering with our University Program you can access resources to educate and activate your campus to transform the world.  From study materials to packaging meals on your campus, from Alternative Service Break opportunities to training Stop Hunger Now Ambassadors, we provides programs that will energize and equip your campus to end hunger.

We know the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes, the only miracle story recorded in all four gospels.  Too often we read or hear this story without thought of the ones who Jesus fed.  They came to him because he had healed the sick and they were hungry – physically hungry.  They knew first hand what it was like to scavenge for food, to wonder where their next meal would come from, to go to bed hungry at night.  They came to him and he fed them.  He fed them because he cared for them.  And when he was done there was bread leftover – bounty that only the abundance of God could provide.

There is enough food to feed the world.  What is required is the redirection of human will, and that begins with education and commitment to change — change that begins at home, change that comes from a passion to serve God’s people in Christ’s name.  Change your students, your campus.  Challenge them to step up to be the hands of Jesus.  Challenge them to feed the world.
