As I mentioned in my post yesterday, I’ve got a second book in the works…
The first book is geared towards Mentors — really anyone who might speak into the lives of college students (including, but not limited to: parents, pastors, professors, coaches, directors, et al). I hope it will serve as a guide for having important and timely conversations with students during their formative college years.
The second book will be geared towards college students and will examine some of the things that are literally “killing their souls.”
I’ve already included this quote from Mumford & Sons (found in their song, Roll Away Your Stone):
You told me that I would find a hole,
Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal,
And all the while my character it steals
Darkness is a harsh term don’t you think?
And yet it dominates the things I seek
I think these six lines embody the major struggle I see happening on campuses (and in our culture) today.
And of the many destructive things that students are “filling the void” with — pornography may be chief among them.
Here’s an infographic I found while doing some research (found on Covenant Eyes website).
What stat sticks out to you the most?
What are you seeing on your campus?
What assistance does your ministry offer students who are struggling in this area?
If you have other stats or resources that could benefit this conversation, please feel free to share about them in the comment section below!

Guy, this is an area that our ministry is focused on. So many people deal with this! Especially with the clothing on our campus! We are a sexually driven culture. We talk about porn at least once a month and what relationships once a semester (AT LEAST!)
We use http://www.x3watch.com, Defender Ministries, Every Young Man/Woman’s Battle, Gift Wrapped By God and many other resources. We are even starting a sexually abused small group in the spring.
I would love to hear what other resources are out there.
I’d say we’re more of a money-driven culture. If we spent more time combating greed and educating our youth about the truths and dangers risky behavior, we’d do wonders at stemming most of the fallout we’ve seen today and moreso in the past. “Don’t do it” simply doesn’t cut it; we’ve tried it before and it still doesn’t work.
I see the numbers you listed and I don’t know where you got your statistics, but as a young man myself, I hate to say it but I think nearly all of those numbers are low. I feel like you either polled a bunch of studs or a bunch of liars trying to play it off. I’m more inclined to believe the second.
I see the issue of porn as a kind of masterful deception. So many students come to college with massive relational pain. Porn can be a free, private, and intensely powerful escape from that pain. Unless we are equipped to guide students towards mature ways of dealing with pain, our solutions will tend to be piece meal, misguided or moralistic. IMHO
